Position on the planned classification of ethanol as a CMR substance (Apr. 2025)

Two procedures at EU level threaten the future of ethanol

Biocidal substances are regularly assessed in the European Union (EU) for their risks to humans, animals and the environment. A procedure is currently underway for the hazard assessment of ethanol under the EU Biocidal Products Regulation (EU) No. 528/2012 (BPR procedure) and downstream for harmonised classification and labelling (CLH procedure) under the Classification, Labelling and Packaging Regulation (EC) No. 1272/2008.

Infection protection at risk: 14 associations warn against disproportionate hazard classification of ethanol

In a joint position paper, 14 healthcare industry associations provide information on the effects that the reclassification of ethanol intended by the European Chemicals Agency (ECHA) would have on the healthcare sector. The associations, including BVMed, Spectaris, MedicalMountains, eurocom, VDGH, VCI, textil+mode, vfa, Pharma Deutschland, BPI and IHO, are calling for the planned classification of ethanol as a CMR substance to be stopped. This is because ethanol is indispensable in the healthcare sector, particularly in disinfectants, in the use of medical devices and in the manufacture of medicinal products.
